HOUSTON – The passenger drop-off zone at the Bush International United terminal was closed Monday morning, while detectives investigated an auto-pedestrian accident that sent one woman to the hospital.
"Still shaking. My hands still shaking a little bit. Like it's nerve wrecking," said shuttle driver Marcus Irving.
Irving said he was grateful to be alive. He was parked in the unloading zone dropping off hotel guests, when a woman lost control of her van and hit Irving's female passenger.
As she got out of his shuttle, he was unloading her luggage shortly after 7 a.m., when the driver hit the woman and pinned her onto the shuttle.
According to police, the female driver appeared confused and repeatedly hit the gas instead of the brake. The driver's van pushed Irving's shuttle into a black SUV. She then reversed and hit a taxi cab before slamming into a concrete pillar.
"It was like she just floored it. She just pushed on the gas," said Irving. "Luckily me and (the victim's) husband were able to get out of the way, but the car pinned her up against here. Sad, very sad."
An ambulance took the victim to the Houston Northwest Medical Center, where detectives said she is recovering from leg injuries.
"She took the lady underneath the car with her and drug her. If she had gotten away, the lady would've been dead," said John Jones, the driver of the taxi involved. "I've seen a fender bender at the airport, but nothing like this. It was crazy."
Both Irving and Jones felt lucky as they watched crews and detectives clean up the accident site. They said they are grateful they narrowly escaped injuries.
"I just hope the family is OK. I pray that she gets better. I hope and pray that everybody get better," said Irving.
