The Ganton Gym. Cluckin' Bell. Mt. Chiliad. Caligula's Palace. Ten years ago today, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas launched on PlayStation 2, and Rockstar is celebrating the anniversary with special events in Grand Theft Auto 5, ending today. Because everybody likes to party sometimes, C.J.
Ten user-created missions evoking the 2004 game are available now in Grand Theft Auto Online, with callbacks to San Andreas' BMX riding, jet flying, and bloodring demolition derbies, as well as rumbles in latter-day Grove Street.
Rockstar also is dropping crates in the open world mode, where homies can find green T-shirts referencing the radio stations from the original An Andreas, including Bounce FM, K-JAH, K-Rose and my favorite ... The Dust. Anything green (the Grove Street Families' color) is half off in the game's virtual store, and vehicle mods for lowriders get another 25 percent off.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has already gotten a high-definition re-release on Xbox 360, launching today for $14.99. When it launched in 2004, the game received many reviewers' highest-ever scores. As of 2011 it sold more than 25 million copies across all formats, and that was before its re-release on mobile devices. Fans disagree whether it is the best game in the series, but it's undeniably a landmark title in video gaming.
Correction: Evidently the game is on sale for $3.74, which appears to be special anniversary-day pricing. The download is 2 GB.
